This half term our topic is ’Sound’ and in DT we will be designing and making a musical instrument. We will then evaluate our instruments to make sure that the instruments can create different pitches and volumes. We will also consider the best materials to use for these instruments. The children will use what they learn in our Sound topic to support their musical instrument making.

Science will also be a large focus in the afternoons, when we will be learning about the science of sound.  We will find out about what sound is  and why it is important.  Children will have lots of opportunities to carry out practical investigations and will probably want to do extra research of their own at home!  In Literacy this term we will be focusing on writing stories and newspaper articles. Most of our work will link to the story of The Pied Piper.

This half term we will be looking at the Ancient Egyptians. The children will be immersing themselves in the lives of Ancient Egyptians. We will be looking at the process of mummification and having a go at that ourselves (with action figures rather than pupils!) As part of this, the children will be making their own canopic jars using clay. We will also be having a look at how the Egyptians built the pyramids and investigating the processes they might have used. We are also very lucky to have some artefacts being delivered from a museum for the children to have a look at. To finish it off the children will havebe a go at creating their own bookmark using papyrus and hieroglyphics.  In Literacy,  we will be linking the majority of our English work to our Egyptian topic. We had a mini-topic focus on Roald Dahl where we wrote instructions for the children’s own ‘marvellous medicines’. We are currently learning stories about the Egyptian Gods and will write our own interpretation.
